Hike with Hemlock Restoration Initiative at John’s Rock in Brevard

Sunday, May 3, 2026 (8:00 AM - 11:00 AM) (EDT)

Description

ease join us on Sunday, May 3rd at 8:00 am for an educational hemlock and birding hike with the Hemlock Restoration Initiative and Conserving Carolina. This early morning hike will begin at the John Rock Loop trailhead and will lead up to a stand of hemlocks recently re-treated by HRI. While we hike, your hike leaders will cover the ecological importance of hemlocks with a focus on their role in bird habitat. We will also cover what is threatening the hemlocks, what is being done about it, and more. Once we get to the hemlock stand at Picklesimer Fields, we will take some time to silently bird watch. Hemlocks are extremely important for bird habitat, especially for species such as the Black-throated green warbler, the Blackburnian warbler, the Blue-headed vireo, and the Acadian flycatcher. The hike is a moderately strenuous 2 mile out-and-back with a creek crossing. We will plan to arrive back at our vehicles at 11am. More information about the trail can be found here. In case of poor weather, this hike will be rescheduled to Sunday, May 24th. *****RSVP is required***** Please register at the Hemlock Restoration Initiative here.
